Sms and the trouble they can get you into!
Have you ever sent a message and wish you could press the UNSEND button? Well I have on many occasions. Needless to say the result of my sms has had rippling effect I still feel today.
I few years back, we were having Cake and Coffee at my house and we decided to invite our friends around. So I dutifully put the message on my cell phone together and pressed send. To my horror I had invited my CEO who I hate a distinct dislike for. He must have been surprised at my message but even more so at my next one that came through.
1st Message: “Please come over and celebrate my birthday with Coffee and Cake we need your scintillating personality to liven things up".
Now this particular CEO was as dry and humorless as a piece of old told and as for being scintillating, well he would put a wall to sleep he had so much personality. He was a bully and believed that people needed to be terrified to work properly. Needless to say his tactics did not work on me one bit. I have faced a knife at my throat and no human will ever scare me again.
I realized in horror that I had invited this unwanted and most disliked person to my home to celebrate my birthday and looked at my phone in horror as if this implement was the reason for my disconcertion. As if it had somehow decided to ruin my day by picking the wrong person to sms. I flapped and panicked and thought what would happen to my wonderful serene home if I allowed this negativity into to it and thought the better of it.
2nd Message: Sorry Mr. C, you are not invited; Your cell phone number was chosen in error. I was actually inviting one of my friends. Apologies!
Well I went to work with great trepidations the following day but nothing was said until he got his revenge later, he called a huge meeting on the landing of our upstairs offices, invited all the staff and proceeded to sing happy birthday to me and made it quite clear that he was so sorry not to have attended my birthday party. I hate being the centre of attention and he knew this so he took great delight in having some fun at my expense. So I suppose he had a sense of humour after all.
It was in this same time when cell phones were still very exciting, not so much anymore! We were invited to Bern’s sisters house for a braai (some people know it as a barbeque) Now we had been having a family disagreement with one of the sister’s husband and we did not approve of the way he was treating her. We had made a point of saying that she had chosen to live with him and that was her choice but we would not accept his drunken outburst which was our right as we can choose who we mix with. So Bern asked me to find out if her sister and her husband were attending.
So I duly sent of the sms. “Are so and so (not using her name for obvious reasons!) And her drunken idiot (not the word I used, needless to say it was a rather rude swear word I used) of a husband attending? If so then apologies we will not be attending” and pressed send.
My heart beat increased 1 million fold. I had sent it to the wrong sister. I had sent it to the sister who had the awful husband. I sat there in an absolute panic. Tried every button to unsend it knowing full well that this function was not available.
I think I need a message that pops up on my cell before I press send!
Are you sure you want to send this message, are you absolutely sure you have chose the correct person to send this message to, if so double click your heels, press the # button then press yes yes yes. This should prevent these kinds of errors!
I duly received a response in 5 seconds flat. It read
“No I will not be attending with her drunken husband so please free to enjoy!”
I could not believe that I had sent the message to her totally by mistake as I am very find of her and have always been there for her in the middle of the night when she needed rescuing and it is not in my nature to intentionally hurt anyone. Now my dilemma was how to apologize, I could not be fickle and say I was sorry and I did not mean it So I apologized for sending it to the wrong person and said any time he was not around we would get together as we loved her dearly and hated how he treated her.
There was not much else I could do. To this day I still get that horrid feeling in the pit of my stomach when I press send….. Have I sent it to the right person?
My Sarah has not learnt this trick yet , to double check and click your heels once and be double sure you have the receivers name correct.
Message read –" Thank you for a wonderful evening my babe, I really enjoyed it and cant wait to see you again. Grrrrrrr!”
Reply: Who is babe, and what does he do for a living and what does Grrrr mean. Love Your Dad!!”
Well we collapsed into puddles of laughter and Sarah had a hard time explaining that sms. There are certain things girls do not want their dads to know even if it had been a thank you for a dinner and you were expressing that you think he is kind of hot!
Dads have this power of making you feel like a child again and they will not accept that their daughter has boyfriends and that the boyfriends may actually do a tad more than kiss their daughters!
Sms can have the most far reaching disastrous effects on the sender and the receiver as we have become cowards when wanting to tell anyone exactly how we feel about them, or just to be all romantic. But when the message goes to the unintended person and may be about them, well that is worse than root canal.
